Inventory Ledger Design

Clockwork Logistic Systems

Role: User Experience Designer

Industry: Supply Chain

Users: Administrators, Clockwork employees

Programs Used: Figma & Zeplin

Problem Statement

The customer needs a digital way to track the locations of all their inventory and schedule bookings on them. Right now, they are using multiple spreadsheets, physical documentation, and no automation to perform this process.

Constraints

  • It needs to use a new table component that the product and development teams agree on

  • It needs to be done in 1 sprint

  • It needs to include a changelog and ability to create a booking from the table

Expected Timeline:

  • Design starts in mid February and gets done by beginning of March (2 weeks)

  • Development in the test environment begins by March and implementation is in May

Design Process

  • The stakeholders scheduled a meeting with the customer and internal team to gather requirements, finalize the timeline, and gain insight about the customer's needs in order to write the Jira ticket.

"Inventory Ledger: Design the Ledger Screen for the use case where in we will be able to display the Inventory information. It should include a basic filter, a log that tracks the changes to the inventory information (which should cover Inventory Disposed, Damaged, In-balance etc.)

Why: Need a screen (table) to display the information collected in the process. We also need to implement a ledger table wherein a user will be able to track the history of the particular line item selected.

Timeframe: One Sprint / 2 weeks"

  • Finds a table asset, consistent with our design identity, compatible with other Material UI components, and with the capabilities necessary for all pages in the portal.

  • Present table asset to the development team, and invites them to play around with it while I continue with the design.

  • Continue designing initial screens while consulting with the stakeholders along the way to answer any questions I had and receive feedback.

  • Show the customer my progress and get the approval for the interaction I have designed so far.

  • Create brief prototype to present to the customer, stakeholders, product team, and development team.

Challenges

Challenge 1:

Finding a table asset that fit all of our needs was challenging because it needed to be easy to implement for the developers, fit the aesthetic of our platform, be easily customizable, and have all the capabilities necessary for each page on our platform.

How I Overcame It :

I searched for Material UI tables and got the development team to help me look. Once we found a few, we looked into demos and the code to see how it was structured and examples of how it was being used. I got to use my knowledge of Frontend development to choose the one that best fit out platform.
